Kearney was chosen as the future home of the Central Nebraska Veterans Home and now officials are beginning to think of when and how the transfer to the new facility will take place.
A group of 50 people were at the Kearney Airport to hear from the Governor, Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse and John Hilgert, the Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Mayor Klouse spoke with KRGI News and he says while the community is excited about the home, he says a lot of work is ahead.
Hilgert says construction and moving depends on a number of factors, including federal approval and funds.
Hilgert also says the process should take about five years to complete and the department will work to make the transition for veterans as seamless as possible.
The $121 million project will replace the 222-bed facility in Grand Island.
The current home has about 375 employees, and the new home is expected to generate millions for Kearney's economy.
